Chapter the First

The Age of Defiance

In the early 18th century, hidden throughout the Scottish Highland glens, thousands of stills operated in quiet defiance of the excise tax law. The spirit they produced was raw, characterful, and treasured by those who knew its hiding places—a liquid rebellion against the Crown’s insatiable tax collectors.

It was the job of the excise men—the gaugers—to hunt them down. Armed with measuring rods and the authority of the Crown, these officers traversed some of the most inhospitable terrain in Britain, searching for the telltale wisps of peat smoke that betrayed a hidden still.

Chapter the Second

The Gauger’s Reckoning

By 1823, the scale of illicit distillation had become ungovernable. In that year alone, the gaugers detected 14,000 illicit stills across Scotland. The Excise Act of 1823 sought to tame the whisky landscape, making legal distillation viable at last—but the legend of the gaugers was already forged in the Highland mists.

Lore has it that not all confiscated whisky was destroyed. The very finest casks—spirits of such extraordinary quality that even the Crown’s men could not bring themselves to pour them away—were quietly set aside. This was the gauger’s share: the hidden reward for a thankless duty, a private treasury of Scotland’s most remarkable whiskies.

Chapter the Third

A Royal Purpose

We think whisky is best enjoyed with friends sampling a trio of pours side by side—as a ‘flight’. The synergy from a flight elevates the experience by exposing how variations in age, wood, or process shape the flavour, aroma, and sensations that make whisky a unique spirit.

Like the gaugers of old, we seek out Scotland’s finest independent bottlings—whiskies of character, provenance, and distinction. We present them in curated flights of three, inviting you to gauge for yourself and share with friends.

Chapter the Fourth

The Royal Commission

The Gauger’s Share is an independent Scottish whisky bottler based in Kirkwall, Orkney—Scotland’s most northerly whisky outpost and home to the legendary Highland Park distillery. From this windswept island, we curate single malt Scotch whiskies from appointed estates across Scotland.

Each flight pack contains three 20cl bottles at 42% Vol—generous pours designed for sharing, comparing, and discovering. Our appointed estates include Highland Park, Bunnahabhain, Glengoyne, Glen Scotia, and Glencadam, with more to be appointed as our commission expands.

“Lore has it some of the finest whiskies were not destroyed, but confiscated… The Gauger’s Share.”
