Chapter I — The Gaugers
In the early 18th century, hidden throughout the Scottish Highland glens, thousands of stills operated in quiet defiance of the excise tax law. The spirit they produced was rough, immediate, and fiercely local — a product of desperation as much as craft.
It was the job of the excise men — the gaugers — to hunt these illicit operations down. Crown officers, often outsiders to the communities they policed, they walked a dangerous line between duty and temptation. In 1823 alone, they detected 14,000 illicit stills across Scotland.
Chapter II — The Confiscation
Lore has it that some of the finest whisky was not destroyed, as the law required, but confiscated for personal appreciation. The gaugers, after all, were among the few who truly understood what they held — men trained to measure spirit quality, to assess age and character, to distinguish the exceptional from the ordinary.
What they kept for themselves became known, in hushed circles, as "the gauger's share."
Chapter III — Our Purpose
The Gauger's Share was founded upon a simple conviction: whisky is best enjoyed with friends, sampling a trio of pours side by side — as a 'flight'. The synergy from a flight elevates the experience by exposing how variations in age, wood, or process shape the flavour, aroma, and sensations that make whisky a unique spirit.
We curate flights of Scotland's finest single malts, presented as three bottles of 20cl each, bottled at 42% vol. Each flight is a guided journey — a conversation between distilleries, cask types, or finishing techniques.
Chapter IV — The Club
Today, The Gauger's Share invites discerning enthusiasts to join a community of like-minded spirits. We source exceptional casks, bottle in small batches, and present each selection with the care and ceremony it deserves.
Like the gaugers of old, our members are connoisseurs who recognise quality when they find it — and who believe that the finest things in life are meant to be shared.
Gauge for yourself. Share with friends.
